Meghalaya Government is launching an Early Childhood development (ECD) mission very soon. The Social Welfare Department is the nodal agency for the mission.

Informing about this, Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla said it will be implemented as a pilot project.

“We are planning to come up with an Early Childhood development mission, where we can give better nourishment and Education to our Children,” Shylla told Meghalaya News 24.

He further informed that various line departments like Education, Health are also involved in the project. Early childhood offers a critical window of opportunity to shape the trajectory of a child’s holistic development and build a foundation for their future.

“When these things come up, maybe we will become number one in the country that is our mission,” the Minister claimed.

Asked, he said, “We are working on it, we are trying to prepare, here not only the Social welfare department is involved but ofcourse we are the nodal agency for implementing the project, apart from us Health Department and Education department and other line departments like Home police are involved, we are trying to streamline how to go about it.”

“We want to ensure that when we start the project we should not fail, we want to do it for the whole state, the country will definitely follow this soon,” the Minister stated.

For children to achieve their full potential, as is their human right, they need health care and nutrition, protection from harm and a sense of security, opportunities for early learning, and responsive care-giving – like talking, singing and playing – with parents and caregivers who love them. All of this is needed to nourish developing brains and fuel growing bodies.

He further informed that the state Government plans to implement it soon.

“Hopefully we are planning to go ahead with this project next year (2022),” he added.
