Education Minister Rakkam A sangma on Thursday said the state Government will focus on upgrading the existing B.ed colleges in the state and increase the student intake capacity.
Maintaining that many students from the state go to West Bengal every year to study B.ed, the Education Minister said in Meghalaya around 47 percent of the teachers are untrained.
Revealing the plan to upgrade the existing B.ed colleges in the state, he said, “We have got the proposal to increase the seat catering capacities of the admission capacity of the students in the B.ed colleges of the state. Yes we are examining the matter. Instead of new infrastructure, the existing institutions should be upgraded.”
Talking to reporters, Sangma said, “This is the need of the hour, because in Meghalaya around 47 percent of the teachers are untrained. Maybe this is the reason why we are not getting quality education at the elementary level in the state.”
“ Many of our students are going to West Bengal to do their B.ed courses, more than hundred of our students are going, so like in Tura there are limited seats upto 50 and hundred and even in Shillong,” the Education Minister added.
