Meghalaya Inaugurates Its First Scientific Coal Mine

In a landmark moment for Meghalaya’s coal industry, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday inaugurated the state’s first scientific coal mine in East Jaintia Hills, signaling a shift towards regulated mining after nearly a decade-long ban. Calling it a “red-letter day,” the Chief Minister emphasized that the initiative would revive the livelihoods of thousands who were impacted by the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) 2014 ban on unregulated coal mining.

“After almost a decade of ban on coal mining, we have today inaugurated the first scientific coal mine in East Jaintia Hills.… truly a historic and red-letter day for the people of Meghalaya,” Sangma wrote on his social media page.

Sangma highlighted the hardships faced by individuals and families dependent on coal mining over the past ten years.

“For a decade, those who relied on coal mining suffered due to the ban. But today, with efforts from the state government and support from the Centre, we have lifted the ban and begun scientific mining,” he said.

Encouraging other miners to follow suit, the Chief Minister urged them to apply for official mining licenses, assuring full support from the government.

“We are also working hard to find ways to support traditional and small-scale miners. While there are limitations, we are engaging with the Government of India to explore possibilities for them to resume mining legally,” he added.

The inauguration marks the beginning of a new era for Meghalaya’s coal sector, ensuring that future mining activities comply with scientific standards, legal frameworks, and environmental sustainability.
