Meghalaya police on Friday organised a peace meeting with the community leaders and the student leaders of both Kuki as well as Meitei community at Nagaland Community Hall at Nongrim Hills, following a group fight between some youths of these two communities in Shillong.
Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Dr LR Bishnoi said the meeting is to ensure that there is no misunderstanding among the citizens living in Meghalaya over the violent clashes in Manipur.
Following this peace meeting, the leaders and students of these two communities are seen ‘shaking hand’ with each other.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Bishnoi said, “After the unfortunate and tragic incidents in Imphal and other parts of Manipur, we have decided that there should not be any misunderstanding among the citizens of both communities living in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. Therefore, we thought it wise as a preventive step to invite the community leaders and student leaders of both communities.”
He said yesterday, a small scuffle took place but fortunately the police rushed to the spot immediately and prevented the incident from further flaring up. A total of 16 people were apprehended.
The DGP said during the meeting held at Nagaland Community Hall at Nongrim Hills, the leaders of both the communities have assured to maintain peace and order and to fully cooperate with the state police.
“I am sure peace will be maintained and whatever existing relationship is there it will be further strengthened by this interaction and if need arises, we can go for more such interactions to remove any kind of misunderstanding from their minds,” he added.
When asked, the DGP said that the 16 people were apprehended as a preventive detention and that after the execution of the bonds, they were allowed to go back since it was a minor scuffle due to misunderstanding.
“I am sure that this kind of misunderstanding will be no more in Shillong and that peace and order will prevail. They have assured to never take law into their own hands and in good faith both community leaders have executed bonds and we have been allowed to go,” he said.
