The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in Meghalaya has announced Sadhiarani M Sangma as its candidate for the upcoming Gambegre bypolls. Sadhiarani, the lone woman Member of District Council (MDC) in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), will represent the party in the crucial election.
In a press statement, the AITC confirmed the decision, stating, “Under the guidance of Mamata Banerjee, our Chairperson, the All India Trinamool Congress is pleased to announce Sadhiarani M Sangma as the candidate for the impending Meghalaya Legislative Assembly by-election for Gambegre.”
Sadhiarani, who is the MDC from Dengnakpara, is also the wife of former Rangsakona legislator Zenith M Sangma.
The bypoll was necessitated following the resignation of Congress leader Saleng A Sangma, who was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Tura Parliamentary constituency.
Earlier, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) had nominated Mehtab Chandee Sangma, the wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, as its candidate for the Gambegre by-election.
Meanwhile, buoyed by its landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls from several Assembly constituencies in Garo Hills, including Gambegre, the Congress has put forward Jingjang M. Marak as its candidate for the by-election. Marak is known to be a close aide of Saleng Sangma.
