Meghalaya to Enforce Speed Limits in Accident-Prone Zones

The Meghalaya government is set to introduce a notification restricting speed limits in select locations to curb frequent road accidents. Transport Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar emphasized the need for preventive measures, stating, “There are few locations where accidents frequently happen, so we suggested what we should do. Corrective measures should be there—something always to prevent accidents.”

Highlighting enforcement efforts, Dhar added, “We have asked the police to make sure that overspeeding should be strictly prohibited.” He acknowledged that speed limits vary by region and terrain, explaining, “Speed limit is different from state to state, and we are working on it because different roads, different stretches— for example, the plain area and hill area—are different. But we are working towards that [speed limit] also.”

The government aims to implement differentiated speed regulations based on location, with Dhar stating, “Inside the town, different speed; highways, different speed—we are working on it.” When asked about the timeline for implementation, he confirmed, “Maybe in a matter of two or three months, we will be able to come up with a notification to notify this is the speed limit for a particular road and particular junction.”
