Meghalaya to Send Students to UK Under New CM Global Fellowship Program: Education Min

Shillong, Sept 5 – Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma announced on Thursday that 10-15 students from Meghalaya will embark on an educational tour to the UK next year as part of the government’s new “CM Global Fellowship Program”.

The initiative, designed to provide students with global exposure and enhance their learning, was highlighted while talking to Mediapersons on the sidelines of the 63rd State Level Teachers’ Day celebration at U Soso Tham Auditorium.

“We have already discussed with the honourable Chief Minister about sending 10-15 students to the UK next year for an excursion study trip under the new CM Global Fellowship Program,” Sangma said adding, “This initiative aims to give our students global exposure, broaden their perspectives, and enhance their learning experience. Most likely, 1-2 students from each district will be selected for this excursion to London.”

In addition to students, the program also seeks to send teachers from various districts to the UK for training and skill enhancement. This is part of a broader initiative aimed at equipping educators with modern knowledge and expertise, which they can bring back to Meghalaya to benefit students in the state.

“This initiative seeks to broaden perspectives and equip teachers and students with new knowledge,” Sangma noted.

Asked, Sangma also addressed the challenges faced by teachers in Meghalaya, acknowledging that while some issues have been resolved, others still need attention.

“We are actively addressing these challenges with guidance from the Chief Minister and support from state officials to find effective solutions,” he assured.

Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma proposed several key reforms aimed at improving the education system in the state. These reforms include: Exchange programs between schools to foster cross-cultural and academic learning. Awards for schools based on diverse criteria, not just academic results, to encourage holistic development. The inclusion of local languages such as Garo and Khasi in the curriculum up to class 5, promoting and preserving the regional culture.

“The Chief Minister’s suggestions are practical and forward-thinking, and we will ensure their implementation to create a more holistic education system in Meghalaya,” Sangma said.

Asked about the infrastructure improvements, the Education Minister also emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to improve school infrastructure across the state.

“Over 2,400 school buildings have already been renovated, thanks to funds from initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), and the National Education Policy (NEP),” Sangma highlighted.
