Mendipathar MLA Marthon J Sangma Refutes Influx Concerns, Highlights Railway-Driven Growth in Garo Hills

Marthon J Sangma, legislator from the Mendipathar constituency in Meghalaya, has firmly dismissed concerns that the introduction of Railways could result in an influx of outsiders into the Garo Hills. Highlighting the state’s strong Land Tenure System, Sangma stated, “Not a single issue of this Influx came to my knowledge till   today, in Meghalaya, the Land Transfer Act ensures that non-tribal people cannot procure or buy land here. So, there is no issue of influx till today.”

Sangma emphasized the positive impact of the Mendipathar railway station, which has catalyzed economic growth and opened new opportunities for local farmers. “The farmers from Mendipathar are getting lots of benefits because of the railway station. Women come to Guwahati with their vegetables and agricultural products, which are organic and in high demand, and sell them at higher prices. Transportation costs are minimal—just ₹60 for a round trip.”

Mendipathar holds the distinction of placing Meghalaya on India’s railway map with the introduction of its rail line on November 30, 2014, connecting the Garo Hills to the rest of the country. While the expansion of rail networks to Khasi and Jaintia Hills has faced resistance from pressure groups, Sangma pointed to the significant development occurring in Mendipathar due to the rail connectivity.

He highlighted the establishment of industries in the Mendipathar Industrial Area, a major shift after 30 years without industrial activity. “With the blessing of our Chief Minister, companies like Pepsi and an alloy company, as well as food processing industries, have started constructing their factories. By next year, everything will be completed. These industries will not only generate employment for the youth but also benefit local suppliers providing raw materials.”

Sangma underscored the socio-economic transformation brought by railways and industries. “Now, connectivity to Guwahati and Dimapur is very easy for the people of Mendipathar. Setting up industries plays a big role in uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the people,” he said.

On the Pepsi manufacturing unit being built in the Mendipathar Industrial Area, he remarked, “This plant will not only provide employment to hundreds of youths but also create opportunities for local suppliers.”

When asked about the overall benefits of railways, Sangma concluded, “It’s a great boon to industrial development, and the economic condition of the people will change in due time.”
