MHRC seeks report from Govt on student’s death at Jawahar Navodaya Vidhaya, Mawphlang

The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), Shillong has taken suo motu cognizance of the tragic death of Nathaniel Sohtun, Class XI student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidhaya (JNV), while preparing to take bath at the school Hostel. The Commission has directed the Principal of Jawahar Navodaya Vidhaya (JNV) and the Chairman cum- Managing Director, Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. (MePDCL), to submit a Detailed Report into the incident on or before 16th August 2024.

It may be mentioned that a Class XI student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Mawphlang, Nathaniel Sohtun, tragically died of electrocution on Sunday while preparing to take a bath at the school hostel. The parents of the 17-year-old student, K Miza, and his wife  received a call from the school informing them that their son was unwell and had been shifted to the Mawphlang Community Health Centre (CHC). En route to Mawphlang, the family learned that Nathaniel had been electrocuted. Upon arrival at the CHC, they were informed that their son had passed away. Nathaniel had just completed his SSLC this year.
