Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L. Tongkhar has highlighted the urgent need to improve the State ‘s drainage system to prevent soil erosion and disasters during the monsoon season. With the recent monsoon withdrawal leaving a trail of devastation, Tongkhar stressed that managing water flow effectively is key to avoiding erosion-related incidents, which can sometimes lead to casualties. He emphasized that proactive disaster prevention is more effective than post-crisis responses, especially in light of the recent floods and landslides in Garo Hills that claimed 17 lives. Tongkhar intends to present these concerns and recommendations to the government for immediate action.
“The drains must be properly made. We often see erosion happening because there is no proper drainage. It is very important in areas where water accumulates to have proper drainage so that the water flows smoothly and erosion doesn’t take place. A proper drainage system is very, very important,” he said.
Tongkhar also highlighted the importance of disaster prevention, noting, “As a government, we should focus on prevention rather than cure. It’s better to learn from what happened this time. We know we cannot control nature or calamities—they can strike anytime—which is why it’s crucial to be prepared. To prevent casualties like these, especially in flood-prone areas, we must advise people to avoid staying in low-lying areas whenever possible.”
He further suggested that the government should issue warnings in areas where water levels are expected to rise, ensuring people stay out of harm’s way. Addressing the risk of strong winds, Tongkhar acknowledged that not everyone can afford RCC houses, stating, “We would love to see people have RCC buildings to withstand strong winds, but it’s not always possible. In areas prone to such winds, homes should ideally be built in places where hills can offer natural protection. Cutting the hills and positioning homes against them would provide a protective barrier. The retaining walls in these areas must also be strong.”
In conclusion, Tongkhar affirmed, “As an MLA, I will present my suggestions to the state government.”
