MLA Sanbor Shullai Vows to Tackle Drug Menace, Calls for Community Involvement

South Shillong Constituency Legislator Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday informed  a committee would be formed with the residents and the Durbar Shnong to tackle the growing drug menace.

While convening a joint meeting with the police department, various stakeholders of Shillong Cantonment Area regarding issues related to drug peddlers and illegal migrants at Jhalupara Community Hall, Shullai stated, “We will form a committee, we will select the members from the Dorbar Shnongs, village council as stakeholders to fight against the drug menace, and we will send the recommendation to the state government.”

“Recently, the government constituted a committee to address this drug menace, and I will recommend names from the Shillong Cantonment area to be co-opted into this government-formed committee,” he added.

This decision follows the arrest of Aisa Khatoon, a notorious drug kingpin and peddler from Lower Paltan Bazar. The Shillong Cantonment area has long been a focal point of concern due to these ongoing issues.

The meeting also informed leaseholders and stakeholders that any non-resident, especially those not genuine citizens of the state, must possess all requisite documents, including police verification from their respective states.

The meeting emphasized, “Without these documents, they should not be permitted to stay in the locality. The issue of illegal immigrants poses a significant threat to society and the nation.”

It was further highlighted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had recently stressed the need for strict action against drug peddlers and illegal migrants. Shullai reiterated that leaseholders in Lower Paltan must be aware of their responsibilities, warning, “Failure to comply with these regulations will result in strict legal action.” He also emphasized that property owners found sheltering criminals will be held accountable and face legal consequences.
