Extending full support to the state government for hosting the National Games next year, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju said that the calendar for the games was in jeopardy due to COVID-19 and that the infrastructure was also affected.
Dates are becoming a problem. Goa missed the chance last year because of COVID-19. Although, he is hopeful that GOA will be hosting it this year.
“As a minister, I can assure full help, complete support from my ministry (to the state)…,” Rijiju told reporters at the sidelines of a function at SAI training centre here on Monday.
According to him, the national game is being organized by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Asked, the minister however said, “Now we have issues with Goa. Goa could not host the event due to the pandemic. Initially, it was delayed due to some other reasons and later on, when we were ready, the COVID was a problem for all of us, so I don’t know if Goa can have the national games this year and next year also becomes too close, that is how the chief minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma had a discussion with me and other people in the IOA.”
Stating that the chief minister is very keen to host the national games, Rijiju said, “Conrad K Sangma is a sports lover, he is very keen but I hope the circumstances also favors, so that we can have the national games in 2022 in Meghalaya.”
Asked, the minister however said that the COVID-19 pandemic has really disturbed the calendar, planning and infrastructure creation. He further assured, “For funding, we will assess, we will make the proposal, we will generate funds from various sources including my own ministry.”
