A North Eastern Council (NEC) employee, Shambhu Sharma (58), has been arrested and sent to judicial custody on charges of allegedly sexually assaulting a 21-year-old coworker. The arrest took place on Monday afternoon after a complaint was filed at the Laitumkhrah Police Station.
According to Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger, the incident was reported to the authorities, leading to Sharma’s arrest from his residence. “Last evening, we received a call about an incident where an NEC employee was molested by a coworker. The matter was promptly reported to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Laitumkhrah, who then apprehended the accused and brought him to the police station for further action,” said Nongtnger. A case has been registered, and Sharma was subjected to a medical examination before being produced in court.
Sources revealed that the incident occurred after the accused asked the victim to accompany him to a bank for work-related tasks. Following the bank visit, Sharma allegedly took the victim to his quarters under the pretext of retrieving his tiffin, where he then forced himself on her.
