NEHU Students Union serves 6 day deadline to VC to terminate service of Registrar and other alleged illegal appointees

SHILLONG, OCT 30: Students under the banner of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU Unit on Wednesday staged a protest outside the office of the University’s vice chancellor against the alleged failure to terminate the services of the Registrar and other alleged illegal appointees.

The students also served a six-day deadline to the vice chancellor to comply with the demand before November 4.

The NEHUSU and KSU have been demanding termination of Registrar Col (Retd) Omkar Singh, Deputy Registrar (Academics) Amit Gupta, OSD Dr Debashish Chowdhary and NEHU Guest House In-charge Sajan K Job citing their appointments are “illegal”.

They alleged that the VC of NEHU has violated the rules by appointing people from outside the state in various positions and deprived the capable tribal candidates to take up various post in the university.

Later, the vice chancellor Prof PS Shukla met the agitating students and informed that NEHU has appointed an Inquiry Committee and the State Government also has the authority to set up a committee to investigate the allegations within the university made by student’s bodies and teachers association.

The students and teachers have alleged that the Registrar, Colonel (retd) and Deputy Registrar are not qualified to take over the duties assigned to them within NEHU.

“We don’t agree with this action of the VC because despite the turmoil he is still willing to take leave. In fact, you should be inside NEHU to discuss the issues. If he doesn’t have responsibility for the welfare of the students and NEHU, it would be better for him to leave the university,” said the students during the protest.

The student’s bodies have threatened to intensify their protest if the VC fails to comply with their demand within the deadline.

The student’s bodies have also demanded that the Vice Chancellor should appoint Pro Vice Chancellors at the two campuses of the university in Shillong and Tura.
