No confidence motion against MDA Government on Wednesday; CM says entire MDA united

The opposition Congress MLAs led by Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma on Tuesday submitted a no-confidence motion against the council of ministers led by the incumbent Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh admitted the no-confidence motion moved by the Congress.

The Speaker informed the Assembly that he would allot time on November 11, 2020, at 11 AM for a discussion on the no-trust notice brought by the opposition party Congress and signed by 11 members.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed confidence that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government will defeat the No-confidence motion moved by the opposition Congress against it in the Assembly.

 “We are ready. Our entire MDA is united and we are very confident that we will get through this No-confidence motion,” Sangma told reporters after chairing a meeting of the MDA on Tuesday.

 

This came after the no-trust motion moved by the opposition was admitted by the Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh for disposal on Wednesday. 

 

The opposition has accused the Conrad K Sangma-led government of failing to address multiple and critical issues and to protect the interest of the state.

 

Sangma informed that a whip is being prepared and will accordingly be issued to all ruling members to support the MDA government.

 

The chief minister however said the opposition could have mentioned the issues that are concerning them in other forms.

 

“In fact they had mentioned in their press conference that it (Assembly) is a platform to discuss issues. Therefore, I think there are many platforms but nonetheless, the opposition has chosen this particular route so we (as MDA) are ready,” he said.

 

It may be mentioned here two cabinet ministers – Alexander Laloo Hek and Sniawbhalang Dhar, had recently tested positive for COVID-19, and due to which, they were not able to attend the current Assembly’s autumn session.

 

Asked, the chief minister however said the two ministers had already tested negative for COVID-19, a week back but since they were very weak, they could not attend the session.

 

Stating that tomorrow is an important day for the government, Sangma said that all the ruling members including the two ministers despite their health conditions will be present in the House on Wednesday.

 

The ruling MDA supported by six political parties has a total strength of 41 while the opposition Congress is with 19 in the 60-member House. EOM
