As Mairang set to become the state’s 12th district, National People’s Party (NPP) leader and cabinet minister James K Sangma said he would continue to pursue the demand for upgradation of the Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division to a new district.

“As a party, we have placed a memorandum before the Chief Minister for a very long time and we are going to again stress on the demand for Dadenggre as a district,” James, who is also a local MLA, told reporters.

Stating that the NPP is of the firm belief that Dadenggre deserved to be a district, the cabinet minister said, “This is very justified in every sense…We have seen other sub-divisions being given districts which are not as old as Dadenggre for that matter.”

This came after the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had recently announced the government’s decision to make Mairang as a new district of the state before August 15, this year.

James said Dadenggre is one of the oldest civil sub-divisions in Garo Hills besides having a very big population.

“The reason why districts are given as we all know is to take administration closer to the people. When an area is very large in terms of its geography, when an area is very large in terms of the population and the density of the population, it is important that administration has to be taken closer to the people…as that makes governance more effective and it becomes more people friendly,” he asserted.

Asked, the NPP leader said that there is no reason for him to be upset with the government’s decision to create a new district for Mairang.

“I understand that giving a district is not something which is easy for any Chief Minister to declare, it is not easy for any government to prepare the grounds for all that, it is a very tedious and lengthy process which goes into declaring any sub-division or any area as a district. So there is no question of feeling upset but yes our demand for Dadenggre as a district stands, we have been very vocal about it in the past and the NPP has taken a very proactive stand in the demand for the district,” he said.

The minister further informed that the party has decided to leave it to the wisdom of the Chief Minister.

“…he (CM) knows best how to manage things and it is under active consideration of the Chief Minister,” he added.

On the other hand, the minister said that the party is yet to take any decision as far as the name of the proposed district for Dadenggre is concerned by saying “we will cross the bridge when we get to it…”
