Nomination Filing for KHADC and JHADC Elections Begins

Shillong, 27th January 2025: The process for filing nominations for the upcoming elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) officially commenced today, marking a significant milestone in the lead-up to the polls scheduled for February 21. The counting of votes will take place on February 24.

Among the first to file their nominations was Fantin Joseph Lakadong, the sitting MDC and executive member (EM) from Laitumkhrah-Malki, representing the National People’s Party (NPP). Accompanied by cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is also his wife, along with party workers and supporters, the NPP candidate submitted his nomination papers to the returning officer at the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Mawlai-Mawiong.

Independent candidate Dr. O. S. Jyrwa, contesting from the Sohryngkham constituency, and Daniel Wahlang, contesting from Mawsynram, also submitted their nominations at the DC office on the opening day. The deadline for submitting nominations has been set for February 3, with scrutiny scheduled for the same day.

Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Lakadong highlighted his priorities, emphasizing his commitment to making the Khasi language compulsory in primary education. Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed confidence that there is no anti-incumbency sentiment against the NPP, which currently leads the Executive Committee in the KHADC.

“We have done so many things in the Council. We have passed several Bills and worked collaboratively with the District Council Affairs (DCA) department and the Governor. I would like to thank the Governor for granting assent to many pending Bills,” Lakadong stated.

Highlighting the Council’s financial management, he added, “Unlike the JHADC and GHADC, in our KHADC, salaries have never been delayed.”

Expressing optimism about the upcoming elections, Lakadong said he is confident that the NPP will retain power in the KHADC.
