North Garo Hills Awaits Cabinet Representation as Speculation Mounts Over CM’s Reshuffle

With North Garo Hills having remained unrepresented in the state cabinet for over 15 years, expectations are high that a reshuffle by year-end could finally secure the district a ministerial berth. Senior NPP leader and Resubelpara legislator TD Shira emphasized that while there is no pressure on Chief Minister Conrad Sangma from the legislators, the demand for representation exists. However, the final decision rests with the Chief Minister.

Reflecting on the past, he noted that during the Congress regime under then-Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, “Perhaps no representative from North Garo Hills was accommodated in the cabinet, possibly due to a lack of suitable candidates.”

The situation persisted under the Conrad Sangma-led MDA government, leaving the district without representation in the cabinet once again.

Clarifying that there is no discrimination against North Garo Hills, Shira suggested that a chance might come after the 2028 elections. When asked about the current scenario, he remarked, “We entirely trust our Chief Minister. We will not press him that North Garo Hills’ representative should be given a cabinet berth. There is no demand; we are not going to request him. We found he is very considerate. We trust him—50 percent hope is there, 50 percent may not be. At this juncture, it may not be convenient for him to reshuffle because there are circumstances which he may not find favorable now. But we are happy with him, we don’t have a grudge. However, there are certain people who want at least one of the MLAs from North Garo Hills to be given a cabinet berth. There is a demand.”
