North Garo Hills police resort to blank firing to disperse mob


Police in North Garo Hills district had to resort to blank firing to disperse a mob on Saturday night which gathered at Tapadarengchi operation group centre at around 9:30 pm.
According to a statement issued by the police, “On the evening of February 6, the in-charge of Tapadarengchi operation group centre received information that some villagers had apprehended one person suspecting him to be dacoit/kidnapper and that the mob was assaulting him at Tapa Bazaar.”
Immediately officials rushed to the area and rescued the person who was assaulted and took him to Resubelpara CHC for immediate medical attention.
Concomitantly, rumour about the incident started to spread further resulting in several hundreds of people from neighbouring villages appeared at Tapadarengchi operation at around 9:30 pm.
“The crowd demanded that the suspected person be shown and handed over to them and the agitated mob started breaking the fence and destroying the properties of Tapadarengchi operation group centre compound,” Assistant Inspector General of Police, Gabriel K Ïangrai said.
Ïangrai added, “There was no injury reported to both the police and the public during the incident at Tapadarengchi operation group centre, additional force and SF-10 commandos have been immediately deployed in the area and situation is under close observation.”
In this connection, two persons have been arrested and two cases have been registered under relevant sections of law.
Further, Meghalaya police appealed to the public not to fall prey to misinformation and they are requested to refrain from taking law into their own hands.
