NPP losing ground in Garo Hills: AITC

Meghalaya TMC Vice President Zenith M Sangma on Friday claimed TMC will secure atleast 20 seats in Garo Hills. Further, the TMC leader alleged that NPP do not have a single constituency in Garo Hills in which they can confidently win.

Talking to reporters in Tura, Sangma said, “If you ask someone in Garo hills,  how many confirmed seats NPP will get, they cannot not even show a single constituency where they can claim that 100 percent sure NPP will win, there is no such constituency.”

The opposition AITC leader said even the position of the NPP National President Conrad Sangma is not safe in South Tura constituency, but he may win the seat somehow.

“Even the constituency represented by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma (South Tura) here also doubtful, he somehow may win the South Tura seat that is different but here also doubtful,” he added.

About the performance of TMC in Garo Hills, Zenith predicted, “I am telling you out of 24 seats in Garo Hills we are winning no less than 20 seats. Hardly they (NPP) may win one or two seats, that’s it.”

Hitting back on NPP which claimed TMC will not able to win much seat, the Meghalaya TMC vice president said, “Whatever they are claiming is just to confuse the electors but the reality is something else, rather in the entire state they are not going to get the double digit number.”

The AITC leader also admitted that BJP and Congress are in fight in some constituencies where the NPP is losing its ground.

“Wherever we are not sure there also TMC is fighting with BJP where NPP is in the 3rd position and in some constituencies TMC is contesting against congress candidate, there also NPP is in the third position. Where is the number that they will get, it is just that they are building castle in the air,” he added.

However, being in a contest and winning a seat is a vast difference.  Asked about PM Modi’s rally in Tura, the Meghalaya TMC leader said, though BJP is hardly accepted in Garo Hills but these rallies may have little impact on the floating votes.

“BJP is hardly accepted to the people of Garo Hills, there are certain number of electors which are traditionally not attach with any political parties,  in other words whom we can term as the floating votes, there are some impact one –  two percent impact is always there, so even though BJP organised BJP political rallies, the impact will be very negligible. It will not be possible to convert it into votes,” he added.

It may be mentioned that the South Tura constituency has a sizable number of silent voters.
