NPP not to contest Ranikor seat

​Following the ‘sudden’ exit of Ranikor candidate Martin M Danggo, the National People’s Party (NPP) has decided not to put up any candidate for the forthcoming Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election.

President of the NPP South West Khasi Hills District Kitboklang Nongrem informed that due to the shortage of time, the party has decided not to field any candidate from 35 Ranikor Constituency.

“We had meeting with our National President Conrad K Sangma and national Vice President Prestone Tynsong and the party has decided not to field any candidate this time from Ranikor constituency,” Nongrem.

Asked for the reason, he said, “We will not have any candidate from Ranikor this time because its too late, there is no other reason but there is no more time left for that because people have already filed nominations and our candidate is not yet declare so we decided not to field any candidate this time.”

Earlier, NPP Ranikor block on Thursday held a meeting at Mawthynrew Rangthong, South West Khasi Hills district to elect a new party representative after their former president Martin M Danggo resigned from the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

During the meeting, the party named Nelbi T Sangma as the new president and also chose presidents for the youth wing and women’s wing.

It may be mention during the meeting it was decided to name two candidates, Nelbi T Sangma and Kitborlang Nongrem of which the state election committee will choose one as the party candidate from Ranikor constituency.

Asked, Nongrem said, “From our side we don’t have any problem, we are ready  but it is the party high command who decided not to field any candidate.”

With this the NPP has officially 57 candidates contesting in the upcoming Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election scheduled to be held on 27th February.
