The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has welcomed the government’s decision to institute an independent inquiry committee headed by a retired judge into the alleged scams in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

Expressing satisfaction with the Independent enquiry, PDF president and cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh on Thursday said, “The inquiry will start now…so we will wait and see what the outcome is and based on that we will sit down and decide.”

The reaction of PDF came after another alliance partner in the present Government ‘BJP’ has demanded CBI enquiry into the alleged corruption in MeECL specially with regard to the implementation of Saubhagya Scheme.

On the Congress’ demand for a CBI inquiry into the alleged scam in the implementation of the Saubhagya scheme in the state, the PDF leader however said Congress is just playing its role as an opposition which is part of politics.

“If we are in the opposition definitely we will also do the same,” he added.

Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has decided to leave it to wisdom of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to take a call on the demand for relieving the incumbent power minister James K Sangma from his portfolio pending the inquiry into the alleged scams in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

“That (removal of the power minister) is the prerogative of the Chief Minister,” PDF president and cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh told reporters on Thursday.

Lyngdoh, who is holding charge of Agriculture and Sports, however informed that the party had discussed the issue related to the alleged corruption in the MeECL with the Chief Minister.

“We are coalition partners of the MDA government and whenever there is anything…we directly discuss with the CM and he always listens,” he said.
