Pinewood Hotel: A Timeless Legacy of History and Elegance in Shillong

Nestled in the heart of Shillong, ‘The Pinewood Hotel’ stands as a proud testament to the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage. While not classified as a five-star property, this colonial-style hotel, often described as the “Pride of Shillong,” offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into the “Scotland of the East.” Its charm lies not just in its architecture but in the legacy it has cultivated over more than a century.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh aptly described the hotel’s historical significance, saying, “It is a piece of history. It has hosted eminent personalities such as the Dalai Lama and Victor Banerjee. More importantly, this hotel was created by a Swiss couple who collaborated with an Assamese family, the Chaudhuris, in the 1960s. Pinewood has seen several changes through the vicissitudes of time, yet it retains a rich history and legacy that we can all be proud of.”

The Hotel is the timeless emblem of Shillong’s cultural and historical heritage, stands poised to share its extraordinary journey through “The Pinewood Hotel Archive,” a remarkable exhibition celebrating 126 years of its legacy. This carefully curated showcase, featuring photographs and memorabilia, offers a rare glimpse into the hotel’s transformation over the decades, its role in pivotal historical events, and its enduring bond with the local community.

Established in 1898, Pinewood Hotel has witnessed the passage of time, serving as both a silent observer and an active participant in the unfolding of Shillong’s story. Its colonial architecture, coupled with a distinct cultural charm, has made it a cherished landmark and an integral part of the region’s identity. From hosting notable dignitaries to being the backdrop of significant milestones, the hotel has become synonymous with elegance, history, and warmth.

Despite not being ranked as a five-star or seven-star establishment, Pinewood Hotel offers an experience that goes beyond luxury ratings. Minister Lyngdoh reflected on this unique charm, stating, “I used to tell people that when you visit Pinewood, you don’t look at it as a five- or seven-star hotel. The moment you step outside your room and look up at the sky, you can see hundreds of stars. The legacy of this hotel is intertwined with Shillong’s history, and while we are on the right track to adding more value to the property, it remains a priceless asset of ours. Significant restoration work is underway, and we aim to optimize its heritage for future generations.”

To commemorate 126 years of its illustrious history, the Pinewood Hotel is hosting “Reminiscing Pinewood,” a four-day event from December 20 to 23. Organized by the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation in collaboration with Piam La Tynrai, the event showcases the hotel’s transformative journey through a curated exhibition of archival photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia.

“This is the first time in several years that the Department of Tourism is celebrating a momentous occasion like the 126th anniversary of Pinewood Hotel,” Lyngdoh noted. “This is one of the oldest hotels in the country and was rated among the top 50 hotels in India back in the 1990s. We have uncovered treasures from the hotel’s past, including vintage music pieces, old menus, and rare drinks. These are now part of a growing museum. Additionally, we’ve restored spaces like the billiard room, which was in a complete state of disrepair. Our efforts are focused on enhancing Pinewood to ensure it remains a destination where tourists can experience its history as it was 126 years ago.”

Visitors to the event are treated to an immersive journey through time, with storytelling sessions, theatrical performances, and live music bringing Pinewood’s rich history to life. The exhibitions provide a deeper appreciation of its role in Shillong’s cultural narrative, while the festive atmosphere adds to the celebration of its enduring charm.

The Pinewood Hotel is not just a place to stay—it is a living symbol of Shillong’s identity and history. With its legacy firmly rooted in elegance and resilience, Pinewood continues to inspire admiration and awe, preserving its heritage while embracing the future.
