Police seizes huge cache of explosives from Byrnihat


Meghalaya Police on Friday morning seized a huge cache of explosives near Byrnihat out Post in Ri Bhoi from a vehicle which was proceeding towards Guwahati, Assam.  Confirming the report Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, one person who was there in the vehicle was arrested.

“There were detonators and Gelatine sticks that were Confistigated from that vehicle and the person who was there in the vehicle was also arrested immediately,” Conrad Sangma, chief Minister said.

Acting on a tip-off, Ri Bhoi Police conducted checking under Byrnihat Police Outpost and apprehended one vehicle suspected of carrying explosives on Friday at around 1:10AM.

Police said the vehicle was intercepted after the driver of the vehicle tried to escape by speeding.

 “….around 01:10 am police officials of Ri-Bhoi District intercepted 1 (one) vehicle bearing registration number AS-01 BV 8065 near Byrnihat Out Post which was proceeding towards Guwahati, Assam,” police said.

Police could intercept the vehicle after a ‘cat and mouse chase’, Police in the statement said, “ The vehicle was initially signalled to stop at Umsning but the driver of the vehicle evaded the police team by speeding the vehicle, following which a police team pursued the vehicle and it was finally detained in Byrnihat.”

During thorough checking, a huge quantity of explosives were seized from the vehicle (TUV 300).

 “On searching the vehicle, 2044 nos. of aluminium instantaneous electrical detonator and 4027 nos. of neo-gel (gelatine sticks) were found inside the vehicle,” Police said.

Informing further, the chief Minister said, “In the process lot of investigation was done and we have not released the person yet because he had no documents with him but our initial reports and inputs and the finding are that there is no threat to law and order that this particular detonators and gelatine sticks were more related to a stone query in certain part of the state.”

A criminal case has been registered under Nongpoh Police Station against the occupant of the vehicle under relevant provision of the Explosive Substances Act and the explosive substances have also been seized.

“ The investigation of the case is in progress to further ascertain the facts,” police added.
