Police teams to be deployed at identified junctions; 10 members of HNYF picked up by police

East Khasi Hills police have sounded extra vigilance after the tourists’ vehicles with Assam registration numbers were stopped from travelling to Sohra and Dawki by the pressure group Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF).

The police team will be deployed both at Umtyngar junction and Mawlai-Mawïong areas for the safety and security of tourists travelling to Shillong and further proceeding towards Sohra and Dawki.

The district police have also arrested as many as 10 members of the pressure group Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF) after they stopped tourists’ vehicles with Assam registration numbers from travelling to Sohra and Dawki.

The vehicles were stopped at Umtyngar area which is around 22 kms from Shillong.

Talking to Meghalaya News 24, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills district Sylvester Nongtnger said from tomorrow police teams will be deployed.

“From tomorrow onwards a team of police will be there at Umtyngar junction, this is for the safety and security of all the tourists who are travelling either to Sohra or Pynursla area or to Dawki area. Likewise we will be keeping a police team at the entry area of Shillong that is at Mawlai-Mawïong area  for the safety and security of the tourists who are visiting from neighbouring Assam,”  Nongtnger said.

Talking about the incident he said, “At around 11 am we received information that certain NGOs are checking vehicles at the Umtyngar junction, preventing the tourist vehicles bearing Assam Registration number from proceeding either to Sohra or Pynursla area, accordingly we sent a team from Sohra SubDivision led by Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) and Officer-in-Charge Sohra and likewise we also send Officer-in-Charge Mawngap and also a team of officers from Shillong.”

“ The team from Sohra reached first and they found yes certain NGOs are there around 10 of them and after verifying they found that they are the members of HNYF and our officers told them not to do this to check vehicles prevent the tourists from visiting Sohra and Pynursla. However, they continued to do so but on reaching our teams the SOT from Shillong all the tourists vehicles  having Assam registration and allowed to proceed to Sohra or Pynursla area. In this connection, 10 members of HNYF were picked up and a case was registered at Mawngap police station,” the SP added.
