New Delhi, Sept 5 – On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, honored teachers from across the country at a special function in New Delhi, presenting the prestigious National Teachers’ Awards.
Everlasting Pyngrope, Principal of Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School from Ri Bhoi district, Meghalaya, was among the distinguished awardees. He was recognized for his outstanding contributions to education and nation-building, particularly through his work in the School Improvement Plan and his support for Children with Special Needs (CWSN).
Pyngrope’s efforts in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) through smart classrooms and computer labs have fostered interactive and effective learning. His focus on CWSN students, through specialized learning materials and mentorship, has been instrumental in improving education outcomes. He has collaborated with the District Social Welfare Department to provide support for students eager to learn, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.
Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu emphasized the vital role teachers’ play in shaping not only educated citizens but also compassionate, ethical, and enterprising individuals. She remarked, “Teaching is not just a job; it is a sacred mission of human development.” The President encouraged teachers to focus on the holistic development of children, recognizing their natural talents and nurturing them beyond academics, such as sports, leadership, and social welfare activities.
The National Teachers’ Awards 2024 recognized 50 outstanding teachers from 28 states, 3 Union Territories, and 6 organizations. The rigorous selection process involved three stages: district, state, and national levels, with 34 male and 16 female teachers, including 2 differently-abled teachers, among the recipients.
In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which stresses the importance of motivated and capable faculty, this year’s awards also extended to higher education institutions (HEIs) and polytechnics. Sixteen teachers from polytechnics, state universities, and central higher education institutions were honored, reflecting the government’s commitment to cultivating excellence in education.
