Proximity to Golden Triangle Fuels Drug Menace in Meghalaya, Says DREAM Mission Director

Shillong, Dec 13: Francis G. Kharshiing, Mission Director of the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM), expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of sealing borders in curbing the drug menace in Meghalaya. He emphasized that despite such measures, individuals would find alternative ways to smuggle drugs into the state, attributing the problem to various factors, including the state’s proximity to the notorious Golden Triangle.
Speaking to Meghalaya News 24, Kharshiing explained, “You see, what’s the logo of DREAM? What is the full form of DREAM? It is Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission. It’s a very challenging task to fight against drugs. So I don’t say that sealing the borders will completely check the drug menace. People will find ways to enter. But the mission of the government now is to reduce this menace. As far as prevention is concerned, the police department is in full gear to counter this.”
On being asked about the reasons behind the sudden increase in drug-related issues in the state, Kharshiing said, “I really cannot give you an answer offhand; there are various factors involved. Number one is the increase in vehicular traffic. Now we have very good roads, and vehicles can easily travel crisscross across states. Most importantly, it’s our proximity to the Golden Triangle, which is a huge problem and one of the major factors. There are also other factors, such as the incentives for these smugglers. There is a huge incentive for being involved in this—it’s just a sort of business.”
When questioned about suggestions made to the government to address the issue, Kharshiing revealed that extensive discussions had taken place. “Yes, there’s been serious discussion with the government. I’ve been part of these discussions. The police are fully geared up, and we are expecting some new changes in the way the police handle these issues. I am certain there’s a lot of change. The home department, under the deputy home minister, has convened a series of meetings. In fact, the chief minister has also convened meetings. It only shows that the government is extremely serious about this matter,” he added.
Kharshiing reiterated that while combating the drug menace is a complex challenge, coordinated efforts and proactive measures by the government, law enforcement, and the community are key to addressing the issue effectively.
