The Election Commission of India (ECI) is monitoring the COVID-19 situation before taking a decision to announce bye-elections to parliamentary and assembly constituencies that include Rajabala and Mawryngkneng constituency in the state.
“Until and unless there is improvement (in the COVID situation), there will not be any declaration as yet. This not only applies for Meghalaya but for elections across the country,” State’s Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said on Monday.
On May 5, the ECI had deferred the bye-elections of parliamentary and assembly constituencies due to the outbreak of the second wave of Covid-19 across the country.
The bye elections to Rajabala and Mawryngkneng were necessitated following the passing away of sitting legislators – Dr Azad Zaman and David A Nongrum.
Asked, Kharkongor said that this particular notification of the ECI still stands.
