Rajabala MLA demands review of reservation policy with 50 % allocation for unreserved category

AITC legislator from Rajabala Legislative Assembly Constituency Dr Mizanur Rahman Kazi on Monday demanded the review of reservation policy with 50 percent allocation for  unreserved (general category) citing the Supreme Court verdict that the States cannot grant more than 50 per cent reservation for any tribe and caste.

In a statement to the media, Dr. Kazi said, “In view of the demands made by several organisations on the Reservation Policy, I , as the MLA of Rajabala Constituency, would like to draw the attention of the Honourable  CM and the government of Meghalaya to review the prevailing Reservation policy of Meghalaya wherein 85 % is being reserved for SC /ST and others which is against the Reservation Policy set up by the Honourable Supreme Court of India.”

He said, “As per the Hon’ble Supreme Court Verdict on 08-03-2021  in the case of  Jaishree Laxmanrao Patil Vs Govt of Maharastra  and Indra Sawhney  V/s Union of India in 1992,  Hon’ble SC has set the  limit and does not allow for any reservation for any Tribe/caste more  than the 50% limit,  hence it is totally against the SC verdict, therefore, I strongly demand for the review and allocation of 50% for the Unreserved category as per the guidelines laid down by the Honourable court.”
