Rakkam welcomes 3 Congress legislators under NPP fold

SHILLONG, AUG 13: Will once single largest party end up having single legislator? Amidst the murmuring of three Congress legislators are in negotiations with ruling NPP,  once the single largest party in Meghalaya, might end up with just one legislator if the rumored negotiations with the ruling NPP result in the defection of three Congress MLAs—Gabriel Wahlang, Charles Marngar, and Celestine Lyngdoh.  Meanwhile, NPP leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma on Tuesday said the party is ready to welcome the three Congress MLAs to its fold.

While he acknowledged the speculation about the MLAs’ potential move, Sangma noted he has no confirmation on the matter. He reiterated that collaboration is crucial in politics, and if the reports prove true, it would be a constructive step forward.

Speaking to Mediapersons, Rakkam said, “NPP will definitely welcome anybody be it political leaders or be it MLAs. It is a good move to welcome them if it (the news of the three Congress MLAs joining NPP) is true.”

He however said he has no idea whether the Congress legislators will really join the NPP or not.

“But sitting in the opposition will not serve the purpose. It is always good to work together as at the end of the day, we are serving the people – we have to build the roads, schools, hospitals. Sometimes in politics, if it is black, they have to make it white. For the sake of being in opposition, we have to protest and we have to oppose (but) not from the inside. If that news is true it is very good news,” the minister said.

This potential shift could significantly impact the party’s presence in the state’s legislative assembly. The outcome of these negotiations will be closely watched, as it could alter the political landscape and influence the dynamics of upcoming elections and legislative decisions.
