Re-Election Held in 4 Polling Stations Under Heavy Security in JHADC Constituencies

Amid tight security, re-election was conducted at four polling stations across two constituencies of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) on Saturday. Voter turnout at the affected polling stations stood at Wapung Skur A (85.12%) and Wapung Skur B (83.13%) under the 22-Musniang Rangad District Council constituency, while Bataw A (80.58%) and Bataw B (77.43%) were recorded under the 29-Bataw Lakadong District Council constituency. This brought the overall voter turnout to 76.77% in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and 85.58% in the JHADC.

The repolling was necessitated by incidents of election-related violence in East Jaintia Hills, where an unidentified mob stormed polling stations, vandalized Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and disrupted the voting process. The Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officers confirmed that the situation required immediate intervention, prompting the returning officer to order a re-election in the affected polling stations. Security forces were deployed to ensure a smooth and orderly voting process.
