Relocation of Hawkers And Vendors From Khyndailad Will Be Done By Mid-November: Paul

The bustling streets of Khyndailad, one of Shillong’s most prominent commercial hubs also known for its major second-hand clothes market, are set to undergo a significant transformation. The Meghalaya government is preparing to notify vending zones in three locations within Khyndailad, as part of the first phase of a broader plan to relocate hawkers and vendors from the state capital.

The relocation process is expected to be completed by mid-November, paving the way for the full pedestrianization of the area.

This initiative will include relocating vendors, issuing permits, and dedicating the space exclusively for pedestrian use.

In an exclusive interview to Meghalaya News 24, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh explained the government’s plan, stating, “The exercise should now be taken to its logical end. Certain spots have been identified within the Khyndailad Junction, as well as other commercial areas like Laitumkhrah. The vending zones will now be notified, with Khyndailad forming part of the first phase, and Laitumkhrah in the second.”

The government’s vision is to transform Khyndailad into a Hawker-Free Zone, ensuring the area is reserved solely for pedestrians. “As far as Khyndailad is concerned, we should be able to complete the exercise by mid-November. This means relocating the vendors, issuing them the necessary permits, and moving forward with the pedestrianization of Khyndailad,” the Minister added.

Three specific locations within Khyndailad have already been identified to accommodate hawkers who meet the criteria set by the Department of Urban Affairs. The government intends to absorb all qualifying vendors, with estimates suggesting that around 200 to 250 hawkers are likely to be relocated.
