Relocation of Hawkers from Khyndai Lad Uncertain This Year: Deputy CM Dhar

Shillong, Nov 26: The relocation of hawkers from Khyndailad this year appears uncertain as Deputy Chief Minister Incharge Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar, expressed a collaborative approach to resolving the issue.

Talking to Mediapersons in Shillong, Dhar stated that the government would work alongside hawkers and ensure their concerns are addressed. He emphasized the importance of coordination and mutual understanding, noting that hawkers are “wise people” and unlikely to oppose the government’s plans.

Speaking on the issue, Dhar assured cooperation with the hawkers, stating, “We will work along with them, don’t worry.”

When asked about hawkers’ resistance to relocation, Dhar expressed confidence in their understanding. “All my hawkers are wise people. I don’t think they will be against the government. All of them are my people, and we will work accordingly, nicely, coordinating together and collectively sharing responsibility,” he said.

Asked about the November deadline for relocation, Dhar clarified, “There is no deadline. We are trying—if it’s a little bit faster, it will be better for the state. Before I take any call, I will take everybody on board.”

He added, “We are still in the process of identifying new spaces, and the hawkers should also be happy with the decision. Once the plan is ready, we will call them, take them on board properly, and make a unanimous decision.”

Addressing concerns about registered hawkers, Dhar emphasized, “There are registered hawkers, and we will consider relocation for them only. We will examine the matter nicely and properly.”

Dhar also highlighted the phased approach being undertaken. “As of now, we have identified more than three, four, or five locations, but the identification process is ongoing. This is the first phase, and we will proceed step by step,” he said.

Regarding the festive season, Dhar suggested the process might be delayed. “The festive season has come with Christmas and so many festivals. We will see nicely and shouldn’t be in a hurry,” he remarked.

While the relocation plan has not been postponed, Dhar affirmed that decisions would only be made after finalizing arrangements in consultation with the hawkers. “As of now, they will remain where they are, and when everything is finalized, we will take a call together,” he said.

The Urban Affairs Department is expected to notify the designated vending zones soon and communicate the information to eligible hawkers. After issuing vending certificates, hawkers will be given 30 days to relocate. The Town Vending Committee (TVC) continues to engage with hawkers’ associations to ensure smooth implementation of the relocation plan.

Meanwhile, hawkers and street vendors operating in Motphran and Khyndai Lad recently staged a protest march to the office of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB), opposing the relocation move.
