Even though the monsoon shower graced Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the loadshedding will continue for the time being.
Despite improvement in rain, the CM said the state Government wants to be prudent at this point to avoid any situation of heavy power cuts in the future.
Talking to reporters, Sangma said, “We have been seeing improvement (in rainfall) but at the same time it is important for us to be prudent and we have to realise that just because the rains are coming in we just simply stop everything may not be a very efficient way of working.”
“Prudence is very important at this point in time, we need to realise that even though the rains are coming in how can we sustain the entire process in the next one year so that we don’t have to face the same situation where we had 8-9 hours or 10 hours of Power cuts I think to minimise that we need to have some kind of planned system of maintaining the overall water levels in the different power generating units,” he added.
Admitting that the rainfall situation has improved in last few days, the Chief Minister also informed that for the first time in the history of Meghalaya all the three regions are actually producing power – Ganol ( Garo Hills ) , Leshka (Jaintia Hills) and Umiam (Khasi Hills ) so all three areas and regions today are contributing towards the power supply.
“The good part is that today for the first time in the history of our state all the three regions are actually producing power so we have Ganol ( Garo Hills ) , Leshka (Jaintia Hills) and Umiam (Khasi Hills ) so all three areas and regions today are contributing towards the power supply,” Sangma said.
Calling it a positive step, he said, the state Government has tried to minimise the different inconveniences that people are having.
“We want to ensure that we want to sustain things in such a manner that we don’t have to face another situation of heavy cuts in the future,” he added.
