Shillong Airport Set for ₹119 Cr Expansion to Boost Meghalaya’s Connectivity and Tourism Push

Shillong, April 5, 2024: In a decisive step towards transforming Meghalaya’s connectivity and tourism potential, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has floated a ₹119.44 crore tender for the long-pending expansion of Shillong Airport. The development, seen as a major breakthrough in the state’s infrastructure roadmap, is expected to significantly enhance Shillong’s accessibility to major Indian cities and unlock new economic opportunities.

The tender marks the culmination of sustained efforts by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s government, which has prioritized improved air connectivity as a key enabler of development. As part of the project, the runway will be extended by 571 metres to a total length of 2,400 metres, making the airport capable of handling Airbus A-320 type aircraft. Alongside the runway expansion, the project includes the enlargement of the terminal building, apron, and other associated infrastructure. The completion timeline is set at 18 months, inclusive of a three-month monsoon buffer.

“This is a moment of great satisfaction and optimism for Meghalaya,” said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

“The issuance of the tender for Shillong Airport’s expansion is the result of our consistent efforts over the past several years. Improved air connectivity is not just about convenience—it is about transforming lives, boosting tourism, attracting investment, and creating opportunities for our youth. Once completed, this project, along with our efforts to enhance connectivity and tourism activities in the state, will be a game changer for the people of Meghalaya,” The CM said.

The expansion is positioned as a strategic cornerstone of Meghalaya’s broader ambition to emerge as a premier destination for tourism and investment. The AAI submitted the draft master plan for the project in August 2024, and the land acquisition process for the additional 22 acres required is already underway. Once operational, the upgraded airport is expected to strengthen Shillong’s air links with metropolitan hubs, paving the way for higher tourist inflow, greater regional integration, and increased business travel.

The airport development is part of the Meghalaya government’s larger infrastructure and tourism strategy, which includes nearly ₹4,000 crore in planned investments to create new tourism circuits and upgrade existing ones. The government is also actively attracting private investments to develop high-end resorts in Umiam, Shillong, and the upcoming New Shillong Township. These projects aim to elevate the state’s hospitality sector while creating job opportunities for the local youth.
