Shillong, February 17: After of the District Council elections in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, the Shillong Cantonment Board, in collaboration with the East Khasi Hills Police, is set to conduct a comprehensive security survey aimed at identifying and addressing critical hotspots of illegal activity.

These areas, which do not fall under the jurisdiction of traditional governance bodies like the Dorbar Shnongs, pose unique security challenges.
As part of this multi-pronged approach, authorities are prioritizing the installation of CCTV cameras at key locations within the Cantonment. This initiative is expected to significantly bolster surveillance infrastructure, deter criminal activities, and enable real-time monitoring for law enforcement agencies. The enhanced security measures are particularly aimed at addressing drug-related offenses, which remain a growing concern in the region.
Ayush Maurya, CEO of the Shillong Cantonment Board, emphasized the initiative’s objective: “We aim to pinpoint high-risk areas where illicit activities are prevalent. The police will play a key role in identifying these hotspots, and simultaneously, we will explore the possibility of utilizing Smart City funds or our own Cantonment Board resources to install CCTV cameras for enhanced surveillance.” He added that the plan is still in its initial stages and will require a thorough survey of both civilian-populated areas and locations classified as “dark spots” before a phased implementation begins.

One of the key priorities will be the development of a Strategic Infiltration Control Plan, aimed at monitoring and restricting unauthorized movements in vulnerable areas.
