SHILLONG, AUG 7: Education Minister Rakkam Sangma announced that the academic session for the Shillong Engineering College will commence next year. After an inspection of the college on Wednesday, Sangma shared with the media that the institution will offer a BTech degree in Mining, among other programs.
This will be the first Engineering College in the state and the government is in the process of making the Shillong Engineering College functional at the earliest.
Speaking to Mediapersons, Sangma said, “We conducted an inspection today to the college and construction of the building has already been completed and due process is on to make it functional.”
“However due to certain observations from the AICTE, we are not able to function immediately. The observation from the AICTE is that they should have separate administrative buildings. Therefore, we are coming up with a separate administrative building. We hope this college of engineering will function at the earliest,” he said.
The minister said the government is expecting to be able to start a few courses in the Shillong Engineering College by the next academic session. The college will have five departments, civil engineering, mining, mechanical, electrical and computer sciences.
“This will be the first engineering college in the state and we are working and we will recruit the faculty and staff at the earliest and will make it functional at the earliest as the building is ready. However, all these processes will be taken up at the earliest as per requirement of AICTE,” he added.
“Btech in Mining is something unique and the need of the hour for the hilly state like us,” the Minister said.
