Shillong Gears Up for Historic ISL Debut

Shillong is set to make history as it hosts its first-ever Indian Super League match, with NorthEast United FC set to face Mumbai City FC this Friday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Marking a significant milestone for football in Meghalaya, NorthEast United FC has officially made Shillong its second home ground and is expecting overwhelming local support. In addition to Friday’s fixture, the club will play two further matches at the venue against Bengaluru FC on February 21 and East Bengal on March 8, with an anticipated crowd of at least 17,000 fueling the electrifying atmosphere.

Speaking at a press conference, head coach Juan Pedro Benali expressed optimism, stating he expects a huge crowd that will boost the team’s confidence as they aim for all three points.

Local star Redeem Tlang acknowledged the pressure of playing in front of home fans but believes it will drive the team to perform better, saying, “Pressure is necessary in football; it will help us get the win.”

The match carries added significance as the Islanders look to bounce back from a goalless draw against East Bengal FC, while their opponents, the Highlanders, aim to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games. In their previous encounter, the Highlanders had dominated the reverse fixture with a 3-0 win and are now looking to secure their second league double against Mumbai City FC, a feat last achieved in the 2020-21 season.

Currently, NorthEast United FC sits fourth on the points table with 29 points from 19 matches, while the Islanders are sixth with 28 points from 18 games. The Highlanders have been in formidable form, scoring 37 times—the second-highest tally in the league—led by ISL 2024-25’s top scorer Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who previously netted a brace against NorthEast United FC in Mumbai. With both teams boasting contrasting strengths—one grappling with a lean scoring record and the other riding a prolific attack—the upcoming match promises a thrilling contest that could redefine Shillong’s football legacy.
