Shillong Medical College Project Progressing Positively: Health Minister

SHILLONG, OCT 14: Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh confirmed on Monday that the establishment of the Shillong Medical College is advancing smoothly, with the state targeting a 2025-2026 completion for the second medical college which will be government-run  in Meghalaya.

“We are on track to institutionalize a second government medical college in Meghalaya. We are aiming for completion by 2025-2026, and the process is moving forward as planned,” Lyngdoh stated.

She emphasized that the key pending issue is the finalization of service rules, which are currently under review by the personnel department. “Once the service rules and other modalities are finalized and approved, we will be fully set to move ahead with the establishment of the medical college,” she explained.

Lyngdoh also highlighted that discussions between North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and the health department have taken place but noted that public disclosures will only be made once all decisions are finalized. “We need to wait for the correct authorities to make these decisions before making anything public. We are working through the final modalities, which involve significant official communications and requirements, especially concerning the service rules,” she added.

The Health Minister further mentioned that progress is being made on the Tura Medical College as well. “Construction is well ahead of schedule. The Chief Minister recently visited the site, and I have been briefed accordingly. However, we are still in the process of completing the infrastructure development,” Lyngdoh said.
