The NGOs comprising of the Khasi Student Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Federation Front (HNYF), Jaintia Student Union (JSU) and the Ri-bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) today announced to hold sit in demonstration on 24 November at Kiang Nangbah statue opposite the Civil Hospital Shillong.
Speaking to media persons, president of FKJGP Dundee Khongsit said that in the meeting the five NGOs had taken up various peaceful protests in the state against the killing of five civilians by the Assam police in Mukroh West Jaintia hills.
Khongsit said that the sit-in demonstration followed by candle light on 23 November in Shillong is to show solidarity to all the victims and to also demand from the state government to give justice to all the departed souls.
“As a mark of respect to the victims of Mukroh village West Jaintia Hills, we urged everyone to come and take part in the sit-in demonstration which will be followed by candle night vigil from 3 pm at Civil Hospital point” said Khongsit.
Khongsit said that apart from the sit-in demonstration, the five NGOs also appeal to the public, especially those who are government employees to take part in the non-cooperation on 25 November across the state.
He added that it is high time for the state government to take the Mukroh incident seriously as this is not the first time that the people of the state who reside in border areas face harassment from the Assam police.
“We have seen a similar incident in 2010 in Langpih and till date the victims have not receive justice hence we demand from Meghalaya government to aggressively take up the Mukroh incident with the central government and ask the Assam government hand over the culprit involved in the killing of five civilians” he added.
