South Garo Hills MLAs to Push for Railway Extension to Baghmara

Legislators from South Garo Hills are set to appeal to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to pursue with the Centre the extension of the railway line from Guwahati to Mendipathar, further connecting Baghmara and even Dhaka.

Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma, confirming the initiative on Monday, stated, “We, three MLAs from the district, will be meeting the chief minister to submit a memorandum for the extension of the railway line from Guwahati to Mendipathar to Baghmara and even to Dhaka.”

Pointing to the region’s historical trade significance, he remarked, “This will be the corridor for trade in the long run. In pre-independence times, especially in South Garo Hills, we had a thriving trade and business network.” Emphasizing the role of infrastructure in economic growth, he added, “America is rich because they have good roads. Therefore, connectivity is important for the economic development of the region.”

While advocating for railway expansion, Sangma also stressed the necessity of establishing integrated check points to monitor and prevent illegal immigration, ensuring that development goes hand in hand with security and regulation.
