Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Thursday said he will soon take a call after the position of Opposition Chief Whip has fallen vacant following the resignation of Congress Legislator Saleng A Sangma from Gambegre after his election as the Member of Parliament from Tura seat.
Indicating a possible change in Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and Opposition Chief Whip, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker said he will soon convene a meeting with representatives of all political parties with elected legislators in the Assembly.
Asked if there will be in any change as Leader of Opposition is from Congress which has gone down in the tally, the Speaker said he will take a call before the next Assembly session, however maintained that there is no representation from any party till date.
Following the vacancy created in the House after Congress Legislator Saleng A Sangma from Gambegre resigned as MLA after his election to the Parliament as Tura MP, the Gambegre constituency fell vacant. Infact the number of Congress legislators in the Assembly has come down to 4, with TMC being the single largest party in the opposition with 5 MLAs, there is a chance that the position of Leader of Opposition and Opposition Chief Whip may be given to TMC. The Speaker however, said he will soon take a call in this regard.
Asked despite both Congress and TMC got 5 seat each, the speaker made both Leader of Opposition and Opposition Chief Whip from Congress, he said that it was the Voice of the People Party (VPP) that played a crucial role in 2023 and had recommended Saleng A Sangma to be the opposition Chief Whip, after which, the Congress also got the post of Leader Of Opposition. The Speaker’s comment came after Saleng resigned as member of the State Assembly from Gambegre Assembly constituency
