Surrendered HNLC leader Chesterfield Thangkhiew gun down by Police in Shillong


In a joint operation, the police team gun down Former HNLC leader Chesterfield Thangkhiew in the early hours of Friday.

Chesterfield Thangkhiew, the former general secretary of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), had surrendered before Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in 2018.

The police team on early Friday morning raided Thangkhiew’s residence at Kynton Massar in Mawlai in connection with the recent IED attacks in the state.

Sources said Police recovered one 9 mm pistol, one knife, a laptop and a number of mobile phones from the house former HNLC general secretary.

This came in wake of improvised explosive device (IED) blast at a busy Laitumkhrah market on Tuesday afternoon injuring two people. Earlier in July, suspected HNLC militants triggered another blast at a police reserve in East Jaintia Hills.

The banned Khasi militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed responsibility of both the blasts.
