— Following the division of Congress, NPP working President Marcuise N Marak believes there is no strong opponent of NPP in Garo Hills.
Referring to the recent Assembly elections results, Marak said NPP could secure 18 seats out of 24 which establish its power and popularity.
“If you remember the election results of 2023, MLA elections, NPP won from 18 seats and in 2- 3 seats we lost for small margins, so there is no strong opponent of NPP in Garo Hills, I don’t see any strong opponent from Garo Hills,” the NPP leader said.
Asked about the close contest between Deborah Marak and Agatha Sangma in the Lok Sabha election, and Agatha winning the 2019 election by a thin margin, he said, “ By then Deborah’s popularity was also there, probably because of that she was almost defeating Madam Agatha, but now it’s totally different scenario. By then the situation was totally different, they were at their peak of popularity but now the situation changed.”
Asked if Congress is a sinking ship, he denied saying, he never mentioned sinking word to any political party.
“It depends on the people how they accept this political party, if we perform people will accept us and if they perform people will accept them, so NPP leaders believes in performance.
The NPP leader also expressed confidence that it will be an easy sail for Agatha Sangma in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
“If you go to Garo Hills, you will see a lot of central projects, you talk about PMGSY, it is an initiative definitely has MP’s hand there, definitely she will win because so many projects is completed from the centre,” he said.
He also argued that there have been no lapses in implementation of any of the centrally sponsored projects in the region.
“So many projects were sanctioned that benefited to the people, so definitely she will win,” Marak added.
