Member of Parliament from Tura, Saleng A. Sangma,informed on Thursday that he intends to address the ongoing crisis at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) by bringing the matter to the North East MPs’ Forum and seeking appointments with President Droupadi Murmu and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Speaking exclusively to Meghalaya News 24, Sangma expressed strong concern over the situation at NEHU, where students have been on hunger strike for ten days, demanding the resignation of the vice Chancellor Prof PS Shakla.
Sangma emphasized the urgency of the issue, saying, “We are trying to meet with our colleagues first through the North East MPs’ Forum tomorrow. Everyone is concerned, as NEHU serves not only students from Meghalaya but from across the Northeast. I will discuss this with other members and then decide on the timing to approach the President of India.”
Sangma criticized the state government’s approach, claiming a lack of persistent effort to resolve the NEHU crisis. “The government’s way of addressing issues has been weak. They don’t push with determination,” he said, citing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) issue as an example. “For NEHU, it appears to be the same situation. If the chief minister had pushed hard, we might already have a solution. Along with the other MPs from the Northeast Forum, I plan to push this matter at the highest levels, including meetings with the Union Education Minister and the President of India. Our youth are suffering due to the decisions of a few officials at NEHU. They should not be allowed to dictate terms.”
Addressing the decline in NEHU’s reputation, Sangma said, “NEHU was once recognized as one of the best universities in India. Now, our youth are demoralized due to a lack of response from the government.” Sangma affirmed that he has already discussed the matter with other local leaders and remains committed to pressing the government to resolve the crisis.
