TMC leader and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday clarified that the appointment of the new Leader of the Opposition is the prerogative of the Speaker of the Assembly.
Talking to Mediapersons, Sangma stressed that the procedure is traditionally handled by the Speaker’s office and indicated no intention for the TMC to formally request the appointment.
Asked if the TMC would write to the Speaker on the matter, Mukul said, “There are some things which are considered to be based on the very tradition and practice in the House. So, I don’t find any ambiguity as the whole responsibility is vested upon the Speaker and his office.”
Among parties in the opposition, the TMC currently holds the highest number of opposition MLAs with five, while the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has four and Congress has one.
