With the Indian market flooded with plastic and Chinese toys, the efforts are on to popularise the usage of local indigenous handmade toys.
The Toys craft fair was inaugurated by Santa Merry Shylla, Chairperson Meghalaya Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited at State Central Library premises.
Talking to Meghalaya News 24, Shylla said, “In the Toys craft fair, we are trying to promote the toys that are specially from the locals and also this fair is mainly meant not only for the locals but for all over the states of India and we are trying to promote that such enterprises can be created in Meghalaya. We can create jobs.”
“Plastic toys are very bad for health and environment, so that’s why Meghalaya is trying to create that indigenous craft toys, we want to showcase that these toys are meant for our children, it’s very creative. Our Children also should know that these toys are from our state, traditional indigenous toys,” she added.
The toy fair aimed to provide a platform to revive the traditional, eco-friendly, and indigenous toys and claimed to boost the state’s economy by supporting the local toy industry.
Several local toy makers displayed their work. The special marketing expo for Indian handmade toys will continue till 2nd October.
