Cabinet Minister AL Hek on Monday said the problem of traffic congestion in Shillong city can only be addressed if flyovers are created.

Talking to Meghalaya News 24, Hek said, with the advancement of technology, the flyover can be created in the existing roads and the state Government needs to mull the technological innovation to make these flyovers.

“We have to take some steps for constructing the flyovers like what they have done in Guwahati city and outskirt Guwahati, they have constructed several flyovers. Then only maybe I believe the traffic congestion will be relieved,” Hek said.

Asked about unauthorised parking, he said, “The Government is planning to have multiple parking places in the urban areas to avoid unauthorised parking on the road side. While everybody, despite the fact that they don’t have parking at home, they buy cars, so now the transport department has to issue a strict instruction for people buying cars to get a proper parking facility.”

While stating that the numbers of vehicles are rapidly increasing, the Minister said the roads are narrow as there is no scope for expansion.
