“Better die an independent king than reign as the vassal”. These were the immortal words of resoluteness of U Tirot Sing Syiem, who chose to take on the might of the British and sacrificed his life defending the freedom of his territory. The Death Anniversary of the immortal Khasi warrior U Tirot Sing Syiem was observed every year on July 17.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in his Social Media page wrote, “Remembering U Tirot Sing, a fearless freedom fighter, on his 189th death anniversary. Let’s honor his bravery & sacrifice, and be inspired to protect our land, culture & traditions. May his legacy motivate us to stand up for our beliefs, fight for justice & equality.”
In Shillong, State BJP Mahila Morcha led by its President Suzuki Pariat organised a cleaning drive near the bust of the late freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem.
Talking to Mediapersons, Pariat said the women wing of BJP is trying to reach out to the grassroot level on the various schemes of the centre.
“We want to reach out to the people in need,” Pariat said.
Commenting on the future of BJP in the state, she said, “We need to work hard to ensure that the state BJP comes in power, with hard work nobody can stop us.”
Later the Meghalaya BJP leadership too visited the Soso Tham complex to pay floral tribute to the late leader.
Speaking to the Media, Khrawboklang Basaiawmoit, the state Vice President of BJP said to follow the footsteps of U Tirot Singh and help the state grow stronger.
“We from the state BJP came to pay floral tribute to the freedom fighter U tirot Singh Syiem who has fought bravely for the freedom of the state, we came here to remember him for his courage,” Basaiawmoit said.
The ruling NPP too organised a programme in Soso Tham complex to pay floral tribute to Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Singh Syiem.
NPP leader and cabinet Minister Rakkam A Sangma urged the youths to learn from U Tirot Singh about his commitment for the people and motherland which has helped to get freedom.
“Whatever he contributed for the independence of the Nation really inspired us, we can change the destination but we cannot change the history. The youths of the state should learn from U Tirot Singh, how committed he was for the people and the motherland, because of their contribution we are here,” Sangma said.
Meanwhile, the leaders of various social organisations and pressure groups paid rich tribute to U Tirot Sing Syiem on his death anniversary.
Floral wreaths were laid and a minute of silence was also observed in front of the statue of the freedom fighter at Madan Iewrynghep here.
