The two new faces inducted in Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s Cabinet. The Chief Minister, earlier, dropped two legislators as he termed this as ‘Mutual agreement.’
The newly inducted ministers include National People’s Party (NPP) legislator from Mawhati, Dasakhiat Lamare and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) legislator from Mawkyrwat, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar.
Governor Satya Pal Malik administered the oath of office at Raj Bhawan Shillong which witnessed the presence of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Speaker Metbha Lyngdoh beside other cabinet Ministers and police officials.
On being asked why two members of the same family are inducted in the cabinet, the Chief Minister said, “This decision was an agreement decided when we formed the Government, we had to build up the coalition with six parties.”
He said Dasakhiat and Renikton will be simply replacing the other members – a three-time MLA from Raliang, Comingone Ymbon and Sohiong legislator Samlin Malngiang – who have exited from the cabinet.
The chief minister also categorically denied the claim made by Comingone Ymbon that he was assured that there would be no such changes.
He added saying, “It was difficult to accommodate a lot of people and we were trying to figure out how to move forward, it was then that discussion took place and there was a general understanding specially when it came to HSPDP between Samlin and Renikton and also there was an understanding between Dasakhiat and Cominone, so it was a basic understanding which happened at my level.”
The chief Minister, however, denied any political pressure and said “This was a decision that was taken right at the beginning. All the discussions, the agreements and all conditions that were laid were decided right at the beginning. Therefore, whatever that was done, we stuck to that and that is the result of what is happening today.”
With regards to the other coalition partners, Sangma however said that there was no discussion in the beginning at his level. “The only two discussion that took place at my level in the beginning of 2018, when we formed the government was with the HSPDP that is between Mr Samlin and Mr Renikton and (from NPP) between Mr Dasakhiat and Mr Coming,” he further added.
The chief minister also announced there will be reshuffling in the portfolios among the other cabinet members. “The list has already gone to the Governor, and he has approved it and as I said the notification shall be coming out anytime,” he informed.
